Truss Component & Framing Breakdown
How Roof Truss Calculations Work
Roof trusses are pre-engineered triangular timber frames consisting of top chords (sloped rafters), a bottom chord (ceiling tie), and internal structural web members that distribute compression and tension forces outward to load-bearing exterior walls.
1. Truss Count: ⌊Building Length ÷ On-Center Spacing⌋ + 1
2. Apex Vertical Rise: (Span ÷ 2) × (Pitch Rise ÷ 12)
3. Top Chord (Rafter) Length: √((Span ÷ 2)² + Rise²)
4. Total Top Chord with Tail Overhang: Rafter Length + √(Overhang² + (Overhang × Pitch ÷ 12)²)
5. Gable End Trusses: 2 Gable Trusses (ends) + Remaining Common Trusses
