Jonathan Edward Gullis (born 9 January 1990) is a British politician and former secondary school teacher. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Stoke-on-Trent North from 2019 to 2024. He also held a short-term government role as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for School Standards during Liz Truss’s time as Prime Minister in 2022. In May 2025, he became the Mayor of Kidsgrove.
Jonathan was born in Salisbury, England. He studied at Princethorpe College near Rugby. Later, he completed a degree in International Relations with Law at Oxford Brookes University, followed by teacher training (PGCE) at the Institute of Education in London.
From 2012 to 2019, Gullis worked in several secondary schools across England. He became known among students as “Grumpy Gullis” because he rarely smiled. At the time he was elected to Parliament in 2019, he was working as a head of year in a school in Sutton Coldfield.
Gullis first entered politics as a local councillor in 2011. Although his first attempt at becoming an MP in 2017 was unsuccessful, he won the Stoke-on-Trent North seat in 2019. He became the area’s first Conservative MP and joined the influential European Research Group. His strong opinions on cultural and political issues often attracted public attention.
In 2022, Liz Truss appointed him as a junior education minister. When Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister, he left the role and returned to the backbenches. He continued as an MP until he lost his seat in the 2024 general election.
After leaving Parliament, Gullis said he struggled to find a permanent job. Later, he took roles as a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Social Justice, a public affairs director, and eventually the Mayor of Kidsgrove. In December 2025, he left the Conservative Party and joined Reform UK.
Gullis lives with his partner Nkita and their two children. He is deaf in one ear. He has spoken publicly about his experiences with depression, self-harm, and suicide attempts to raise awareness about mental health challenges.
