About this Gable Roof Area Calculator

A gable roof is the most classic and widely used residential roof design, recognized by its two sloping sides that meet at a central horizontal ridge line, creating triangular wall gables at both ends.

The Geometry of Gable Roof Sizing:

1. Adjusted Roof Length = Building Length + (2 × Gable Overhang)
2. Horizontal Run per Side = (Building Width / 2) + Eave Overhang
3. Pitch Multiplier = √(1 + (Rise / 12)²)
4. Rafter Slope Length = Horizontal Run × Pitch Multiplier
5. Total Sloped Surface Area = 2 × (Adjusted Length × Rafter Slope Length)

Understanding Roofing Squares: Roofing materials are estimated in Squares, where 1 Roofing Square = 100 square feet (9.29 m²). Standard architectural laminated shingles are packaged in bundles of 3 per square. Adding a 10% to 15% waste margin ensures you have enough material for trimming along rakes, valleys, hips, and starter rows.
