California Vessel Sales & Use Tax Regulations

In California, boat taxation is governed by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) under Regulation 1610 (Vehicles, Vessels, and Aircraft) and Regulation 1654 (Barter, Exchange, and Trade-ins).

1. Taxable Amount: Boat Price + Trailer Price + Taxable Documentation Fees

2. No Trade-In Tax Deduction: Taxable Gross = Selling Price (trade-in value only reduces cash out of pocket, not tax base)

3. Gross CA Tax: Total Taxable Base × Local District Tax Rate

4. Out-of-State Tax Credit: Net CA Tax Due = Gross CA Tax − Reciprocal Tax Paid to Other State

5. Total Out-of-Pocket: Total Taxable Base − Trade-In + Net CA Tax Due
